What does “blurt (something) out” mean?

Definition

This phrasal verb means to say something suddenly and without thinking, especially if you are feeling nervous or excited. 

For example – “I accidentally blurted out to my sister what her surprise birthday gift was.”

Joey is looking for a female roommate and he thinks he has found the perfect woman. Once the girl tells him that she is not “a party girl” and won’t invite female friends over, Joey responds with “Don’t just be blurting stuff out.”

As Joey is physically attracted to her, he doesn’t want to hear information that would disqualify her as an ideal roommate for him which is why he uses this phrase.

Johana returns home to be with her family after 4 years of little to no contact with them after the unexpected passing of her brother. During a dinner conversation a rumour of Johana getting an abortion previously is brought up which is why she responds with “Secrets aren’t something you blurt out at dinner.”

How I Met Your Mother – Season 8 Episode 1 (2012)

Barney is engaged to a woman named Quinn and has been keeping a secret from her. Before dating Quinn, Barney had a romantic relationship with Robin, and while they’re now friends, Barney likely worries that revealing this past relationship might create jealousy, suspicion, or mistrust. The rest of the friend group try to keep the situation a secret too but Lily explains she nearly accidentally told Quinn the truth. This is why she uses the phrase “blurt out” in the clip.

Next Stop, Christmas – (2021)

In this movie the character Angie has time travelled 10 years into the past. As she encounters her ex-boyfriend Ben she is struggling to explain the crazy situation to him which causes him to say to her “So, whatever you want to say, just blurt it out.” Encouraging her just to speak without overthinking.
