What does “leaps and bounds” mean?

Leaps and bounds is used to describe something that has improved or progressed quickly. It is normally preceded by the prepositions “by”, “in”, “on” or by the phrase “come on in”.

For example – “My French has come on in leaps and bounds this year since I hired a tutor.”

Clip 1

Clip 1 is from a CNBC news interview with Clark Kent who is the CEO of NFL team Kansas City Chiefs. He is talking about how the female audience watching his NFL team has increased very quickly since Taylor Swift started dating the Kansas City Chiefs’ player Travis Kelce and this is why he uses the idiom “leaps and bounds”.

Clip 2

Clip 2 is from the film The Last of Robin Hood. The female character in the clip is talking about the quick progression of her daughter, Beverly’s, career and is why she uses the phrase “Leaps and bounds.”

Clip 3

Clip 3 is from the British series “This Country”. In this clip the Reverend character is talking about how the female character has quickly changed and improved her outlook and life and uses the idiom “leaps and bounds” to highlight this.

Clip 4

The last clip is from the Netflix series “Formula 1: Drive to Survive.” In this clip the person in the clip is describing how unsuccessful team Renault has been over the last 10 years but since new driver Niko Hulkenburg joined their progress has improved dramatically and this is why he uses the idiom “leaps and bounds”.
